The Oscar Academy Awards in 2022 are just around the corner! All eyes are now on who will take home the top awards as the entire nominees' list was made public. There were some snubs and shocks along the way. As a fan, who would you like to see lifting the trophies? Are you for Don’t Look Up or Dune? Colman or Chastain? Benedict or Bardem? Do you support the Power of the Dog or Saab?
To predict the Oscar award, you need to look for patterns. Read tea leaves, and be a fan of your favorite actors and movies. During the long campaign season that leads up to the elegant evening at the Dolby Theatre, interesting storylines emerge and fade. They could change very quickly. One week, it might be hot. The next, it might be cold again. This is clear now that many other award shows, guilds, and predictions have been made. Who is going to be there next Sunday is very clear.
This article contains our predictions for the six top-tier categories, including who we think will win the small gold men, who we believe should win, and who we'd want to see win. You may consider what follows to be informed guesstimates since we've done our homework, run the statistics, and spoken with various mediums and psychics.
The Nominees include Belfast, The Power of the Dog. Licorice, The West Side Story, Dune, King Richard, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Nightmare Ally and Drive My Car.
The Power of the Dog, directed by Jane Campion, seems to be the favourite for Best Picture this year, with a whopping 12 nominations. Dune, by Denis Villeneuve, is in second place with ten nominations, followed by Belfast and West Side Story, each with seven nominations. With numerous recent victories for CODA, it has become a significant threat to The Power of the Dog's presumed crown. Could Campion's Western triumph or Apple TV+'s first Best Picture award be in store for us this year?
The race to win seems to be amongst The Power of the Dog, CODA, and Belfast.
CODA
After the actors won the SAG award for Best Ensemble, voters seemed to take notice of this entertaining underdog candidate. You could feel the pendulum swinging. Given current global events, it's easy to understand why people could regard “feel-good” as a benefit rather than a hindrance. CODA felt a step higher when the Producer Guild of America awarded this picture the top honour last night. However, the PGAs have been a better predictor of awards season than others, with their 2020 prize going to 1917 and the Oscars to Parasite. Whether we like it or not, we see this through.
The nominees include Paul Thomas ( Licore Pizza), Jane Campion ( The Power of the Dog), Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), and Steven Spielberg (West Side Story).
Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog
This film version of Thomas Savage's novel is faultless, from the opening sequences of riders on a severe range to the dramatic coda. You'll find a filmmaker at the top of her game, with a few breath-taking images. Campion's work has long been one of our favourites, but this looks like the culmination of much of his previous work. For a female director, this is the most mobilization of resources to pursue a single vision - the best "direction."
The nominees are Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Will Smith (King Richard), Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Benedict Cumberbath (The Power of the Dog), and Andrew Garfield (Tick…Tick…Boom).
Will Smith, King Richard
To win BAFTA, Critics' Choice, and SAG awards for his portrayal of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams' father, Richard Williams, in King Richard suggests that despite the recent miss-to-hit ratio, people still saw King Richard and yet still idolize Will Smith in his role as Richard Williams in King Richard. It is Smith's strongest work to date, regardless of whether you like the film. The Pursuit of Happyness and Ali has been nominated for an Oscar before, so this may be Ali's year. Your tennis pun is welcome here.
Nominees are Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Penelope Cruz ( Parallel Mothers), and Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter).
Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye
The irony is abundant in Michael Showalter's Tammy Faye Baker biopic, but Chastain's metamorphosis from a spiritually hungry young girl to a fallen angel is poignant. With all the prosthetics put to Ms Baker's face in her later years, Actor Chastain still has to do her job. She does. However, the film itself isn't all that exciting. SAG, along with CODA and Smith, contributed to Chastain's Faye victory, and considering the overlap between the two voting groups, she may be celebrating more than just God this Sunday.
The Nominees include Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog), Troy Kotsur (CODA), Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog), J.K Simmons ( Being the Ricardos), and Ciaran Hinds (Belfast).
Troy Kotsur, CODA
It's a love story between a little girl, her earthy family, and her grumpy but charming music instructor. It is where unconventional and outré performances, scene-stealing turns and unforgettable "smaller" performances become best-in-show standouts that are safe for the Academy to award. It is Troy Kotusr in a nutshell. His perennially horny, paternally concerned fishers' father in CODA is hilarious and poignant. And in a film that urgently tries to open your tear ducts, the moment when his father listens to his daughter sing effortlessly delivers the tears.
The Nominees are Judi Bench (Belfast), Kritsesn Dunst ( The Power of the Dog), Ariana DeBose ( West Side Story), Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard), and Jessie Buckley ( The Lost Daughter).
Ariana DeBose, West Side Story
And then you have to execute that character against the guy who defined it for generations of filmgoers and won an Oscar for it! Imagine now that you've not only nailed the traditional role but have added your little grace notes, pride, and wrath, making it a unique star-making act. Salute, Mme DeBose. The BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG awards for Anita are set to be joined by another.
